Biography:
Angie Thomas is a children's author.
She lives with her parents in the suburbs of Georgetown. She witnesses a shooting at the age of six.
Angie Thomas holds a BFA in Creative Writing from Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi.
Attracted to literature at an early age, she wrote a short story entitled "The Hate U Give" in 2009 after the death of Oscar Grant, a young black man killed by the police. In 2015 she was a secretary to a bishop and while she was working she took up her short story to make it into a novel for young people.
While her previous attempts to get published had always been unsuccessful, this time she submitted her novel to a non-profit organization We Need Diverse Books which recognized her work and endowed it with an award. Her novel was published by HarperCollins in 2017.
It was a National Book Award finalist and received the prestigious 2018 Printz Honor and 2018 William C. Morris Award. It is a #1 New York Times Young Adult Bestseller.
It was adapted into a film in 2018, directed by George Tillman Jr., and starring Amandla Stenberg as Starr Carter.
Since her book came out, Angie Thomas has been meeting with her readers. She visits schools in the United States and abroad, in person or by Skype.
In 2019 she published her second novel, "On the Come Up".
